The Witham MP, Priti Patel, has welcomed the award of a £82,886 grant to Historic Houses Foundation: The Marney Tower.  The money is part of the £92 million Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage which is managed by Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

This funding comes from the larger £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund created by the Government to support cultural organisations and heritage sites affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Commenting on the award Priti said: “The additional financial support for Layer Marney Tower, at this particularly difficult time, is very welcome and follows a grant earlier this year of £150,700 to the Marney Partnership. The Lower Marney Tower is one of the most iconic and historic buildings in the country and it is the tallest Tudor Gatehouse in England. It is well worth a visit and is a real Essex cultural asset.  In more normal times, it holds events, runs tours and is a place of learning for visiting schools to understand more about Tudor history.

Culture creates jobs, supports livelihoods, and brings joy to everyone. The UK leads the world in the creative industries and we should take pride in that.  In these challenging times, the Government is showing its support for culture with an unprecedented investment through the Cultural Recovery Fund.  It is keen for culture related institutions to weather the storm of coronavirus and come back stronger.”
