Priti Patel visits ten local schools on Get Witham Reading Day 2021
On Friday 9th July, ten schools in Witham participating in Get Witham Reading 2021, received a personal visit from Witham MP, Priti Patel. This is the MP’s tenth annual school literacy campaign aimed at improving standards of literacy across the Witham constituency.
During her visits, Priti heard all about the efforts pupils have been putting into Get Witham Reading 2021 (GWR). She toured classrooms to see themed décor and the costumes worn by staff and pupils to commemorate the day and to hear all about the different ways the schools had worked within the GWR theme.
Priti also brought with her commemorative Get Witham Reading 2021 bookmarks, which were given to every pupil taking part, to confirm their participation in this year’s event.
Priti said: “I am delighted that so many schools took part this year and it has been an absolute pleasure to visit most of them and see the enthusiasm of the pupils and staff for Get Witham Reading. Education will always be a subject close to my heart and reading is a fundamental part of that process but the ability to read shouldn’t just be about learning from textbooks, it should also be about reading for pleasure. Escaping into other times, places and even worlds through the written word is a pleasure that should be available to everyone. If GWR, in some way, helps to make that happen, I will be more than pleased.
“My huge thanks to all the schools and pupils who have taken part this year, with such enthusiasm.”
