Priti calls on Chancellor for GEML Rail Investment
Witham MP and Great Eastern Main Line Rail Taskforce Chair Priti Patel has called on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to invest in the region’s rail infrastructure in the House of Commons. During questions to Treasury ministers Priti called on the Government to recognise the economic benefits of investing in a series of infrastructure projects to increase rail capacity and reduce delays. Speaking afterwards Priti said:
“The East of England is an engine of economic growth for the whole country but we are being held back by poorly maintained and old rail infrastructure. Across the region there are a series of key infrastructure improvements needed to improve rail services for commuters, deliver better value for money for and boost our economy.”
“Commuters are set to pay £3.7 billion to the Treasury over the course of the current rail franchise and it is about time some of this came back with investment on the GEML.”
