Priti welcomes new police funding for Witham
The Witham MP, Priti Patel, has welcomed almost £450,000 of new investment to tackle crime in Witham, to make local streets safer and to reduce violence against women and girls. Over £297,000 of the funding will come from the Home Office’s Safer Streets fund, after a successful bid from Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Roger Hirst. A further £150,000 of match funding has been provided by a number of local partners, including Braintree District Council, Witham Town Council, Essex Police, Fusion, Eastlight and CARA.
The funds will be used on a range of measures including new CCTV cameras, improvements to landscaping that will increase visibility, promoting Neighbourhood Watch Schemes and activities for young people. Almost £1.2m of Safer Streets funding has been given to support projects across Essex.
Priti said: “This new funding coming to Witham and across Essex to help make our streets safer is welcome. In my role as Home Secretary, I have set out a clear strategy to tackle violence against women and girls and I am pleased that Roger Hirst and partners in Essex have been successful in bidding for funds to use locally.”
“The measures that will be funded in Witham will help tackle anti-social behaviour and make our town safer for women and girls, who fear being harassed, attacked and abused.”
