Priti visits Stanway Fiveways Primary School to discuss and promote literacy skills
Priti Patel, the MP for Witham has visited the Stanway Fiveways Primary School (24.01.20) to meet Head Teacher, Jackie Irwin, to discuss reading projects, improving literacy and Pupil Premium. The school has a particular interest in promoting reading, which fits in with Priti’s long term goal of continuing improvement in literacy levels in her Witham constituency. The MP also took a tour of the school’s new library, to which she donated nine new books from Puffin’s ‘Extraordinary Life’ series.
Stanway Fiveways Primary has been actively promoting reading for pleasure at the school to ensure children achieve well. They are committed to taking part in Priti’s annual Get Witham Reading project later this year. They are also investing in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers built around the concept of ‘the balanced reader’ to promote comprehension skills and fluency.
After her visit, Priti said: “It was a pleasure to visit the school today and see how hard they are working on improving reading and literacy skills. Their new library is an excellent facility and I am delighted that they are taking part in Get Witham Reading 2020, which is in its ninth year and is a particular passion of mine. Reading is one of the great gifts that we can pass on to our children and which benefits them endlessly throughout their lives. I look forward to working closely with Stanway Fiveways Primary School in the future.
