Witham MP Priti Patel has met with members of the Coggeshall Library Working Group to discuss plans to save the village’s library from the risk of closure, under proposals from Essex County Council. Priti has been pressing Essex County Council to reconsider their plans and to support and empower those groups wanting to save their libraries and take a greater role in running them. Priti attended the Working Group’s regular monthly meeting at the White Hart Hotel, Coggeshall on Thursday night (30th May).

Priti said: “Communities across the Witham constituency are concerned about the future of their library services. Seven out of the eight libraries in the constituency could face closure, including Coggeshall and I am working with residents to save the library and give it a future.”

“The closure plans are a cause of serious concern and disappointment. But the energy and commitment local communities have shown towards saving their libraries show we have a good chance of finding a solution to keep our libraries open. I have pressed, questioned and challenged County Council over their plans and am engaging constructively with them to find ways to save our libraries and support local communities.”

“I would urge Essex Council to think again about closing Coggeshall Library as the library is a thriving community hub and provides a range of valuable community services to residents locally.”
