Statement from Priti Patel MP on St Peter’s Hospital

I welcome the announcement this week that the NHS Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board (MSEICB) will be undertaking a six-month delay in the final decision regarding the removal of vital health services from St Peter’s Hospital in Maldon, and establishing a working group with wide range of representatives to develop viable solutions that will meet local healthcare needs and demands.

St Peter’s hospital is not just a much-loved local health facility, it is an integral part of life in the Maldon district. After the controversial consultation, the people of Maldon made their voices loud and clear in their opposition to the ICB’s plans. This delay means no immediate change to services at the hospital, with all current services continuing as they are while this further engagement process is ongoing.

Throughout this period, myself, Sir John Whittingdale, local councillors and the Save Maldon Medical Services group have worked tirelessly to challenge the ICB and find solutions so that services remain local in the Maldon district. While this decision and the announcement of a delay is welcome, it is not the end and we stand ready to work with the ICB, local council, and the Government to find a lasting local solution to this situation.
